About the role:
We're at a critical inflection point where our growth is challenging our foundations, and we're looking for a foundational leader to join our executive team as Director of Technology. This is a role for a hands-on executive who thrives in the messy middle of a scale-up and is passionate about building a truly world-class engineering function from the ground up.
Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be responsible for our entire technology function. Your mission is to lead the transition from an outsourced model to a high-performing in-house team, stabilise our core platform, and set the technical strategy that will enable our global growth. We need a leader who knows how to build for the long-term while delivering value today; someone who champions pragmatic solutions and avoids the trap of over-engineering.
What you’ll be doing:
Build the Foundation: Architect and execute a pragmatic technical strategy to deliver a secure, scalable, and reliable platform ready for global expansion.
- Build & Lead the Team: Hire, mentor, and lead our in-house Engineering and Platform teams fostering a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Establish Engineering Excellence: Instil a culture of pragmatic engineering excellence, implementing the modern processes and tooling (CI/CD, automated testing, IaC) required to move fast safely.
- Get Hands-On: Dive deep into our current architecture (PHP, React, Node.js, AWS) to lead the stabilisation and re-platforming efforts.
- Own Security: Take ultimate responsibility for the security of our platform and the protection of our patients' sensitive data.
- Collaborate & Influence: Serve as a key member of the leadership team, partnering with Product to ensure we are building the right things, the right way.
What we are looking for:
- Proven Scale-Up Experience: You have a demonstrable track record of building and leading engineering teams in a high-growth, scale-up environment, ideally managing the transition from outsourced to in-house.
- Pragmatic & Strategic Leader: You are a hands-on leader who expertly balances long-term technical vision with the immediate needs of the business. You make pragmatic architectural decisions and manage technical debt strategically to deliver value today.
- Deep Technical Expertise: You have strong, hands-on experience with modern cloud architecture (AWS), infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and building scalable applications (our stack is primarily React, TypeScript, and Node.js with legacy technology in PHP).
- Security First Mindset: You have significant experience building and operating platforms in a highly regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, fintech) where security and data privacy are paramount.
- Exceptional Leadership Skills: You are an experienced people leader with a passion for hiring, coaching, and developing engineering talent. You lead with empathy, clarity, and a focus on outcomes.
- Strategic & Commercially Aware: You connect technical decisions to business outcomes, have experience managing budgets (especially cloud spend), and can articulate the business impact of technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
